Issuances are not applications
Every count on a post, nationality, class or month page of this site is a count of visas issued. That is the only monthly series the Department of State publishes at post level. It is worth being precise about what it does and does not contain.
What an issuance count includes
The monthly table "Nonimmigrant Visa Issuances by Post and Visa Class" lists, for each post and each visa symbol, the number of visas issued in that calendar month. A visa is counted when it is issued, not when the application was filed or the interview held, so an applicant interviewed in one month and issued in the next appears in the second month. The immigrant table works the same way. Both are published about a month after the month they cover.
What it leaves out
- Applications and interviews. The tables do not say how many people applied, were interviewed, or were refused at a post. A post that issued 5,000 visas may have interviewed 6,000 people or 12,000; the tables cannot tell.
- Refusals. The Department publishes refusal information in one form only: the annual adjusted refusal rate for B (business and tourist) visas, by nationality of the applicant, not by post. It appears on nationality pages. No refusal rate exists for other classes or for posts, and this site does not estimate one.
- Interview waivers. Visas issued without an interview are counted as issuances like any other; nothing in the table distinguishes them.
- Where the applicant lives. Post tables count where the visa was issued; nationality tables count the applicant's nationality. The two do not match, because people apply outside their own country.
Why the Department says not to sum the monthly reports
Since FY2020 the Department has counted issuances by following each application, so a visa recorded as issued in one monthly report may later be revised. Its statement on the monthly statistics page reads, in part: "individual monthly issuance reports should not be aggregated, as this will not provide an accurate issuance total for the fiscal year to date. Instead, refer to our annual Report of the Visa Office for final full Fiscal Year statistics." This site follows that instruction: no monthly reports are added together anywhere on it. Monthly figures are shown one month at a time, a month is compared with the same month a year earlier, and every yearly figure is the Department's own annual table, labelled "FY2024, Report of the Visa Office" or the year concerned. Where the Department publishes no annual table for something (posts, immigrant classes), the page shows the latest month and says so. In September 2025, the latest monthly report, U.S. posts issued 823,557 nonimmigrant visas worldwide; the Report of the Visa Office lists 10,969,936 for FY2024.
Fiscal years
The Department's year runs from 1 October to 30 September; FY2025 is October 2024 to September 2025. Fiscal-year tables on this site follow that convention and are marked complete only when all twelve monthly reports are present.
Where to read more
The Department's visa statistics pages carry the monthly tables, the annual reports and its notes on methodology. The methodology page describes how this site reads them.
